Which Machu Picchu Circuit Should You Choose?
A practical guide from a local Machu Picchu experienced guide
If you are planning your first visit to Machu Picchu, one of the most important decisions is choosing the right route. Today, Machu Picchu has 3 main circuits divided into 10 different routes. Each route offers a different experience. Some focus mainly on panoramic views, some allow you to explore the archaeological city, and others combine the visit with a mountain hike.
The most important thing is to choose your ticket according to what you actually want to see and do.
CIRCUIT 1 — PANORAMIC
1-A — Machu Picchu Mountain
Panoramic views combined with the hike to Machu Picchu Mountain.
Time: approximately 4 hours.
1-B — Upper Terrace
Panoramic views from the upper part of Machu Picchu. You do not descend into the main archaeological city.
Time: approximately 2 hours.
1-C — Intipunku / Sun Gate
Panoramic views combined with a walk to Intipunku, the Sun Gate.
Time: approximately 3 hours. High season only.
1-D — Inca Bridge
Panoramic views combined with a walk to the Inca Bridge.
Time: approximately 2.5 hours. High season only.
CIRCUIT 2 — CLASSIC MACHU PICCHU
2-A — Classic Route
Principal archaeological areas, including the upper areas for the view, then walk to the Sacred Plaza, Main Plaza and other important sectors.
Time: approximately 2.5–3 hours.
2-B — Lower Terrace
A very similar archaeological experience to 2-A, with access through the lower terraces and principal areas.
Time: approximately 2–2.5 hours.
CIRCUIT 3 — ROYAL MACHU PICCHU
3-A — Huayna Picchu Mountain
Includes the archaeological visit of 3-B plus the hike to Huayna Picchu Mountain. Spectacular views from the summit.
Time: approximately 4 hours total — about 2 hours for the archaeological visit and 2 hours for the mountain hike.
3-B — Royal Route
Important royal and religious sectors in the archaeological heart of Machu Picchu.
Time: approximately 1.5–2 hours.
3-C — Great Cavern
Royal sector combined with a demanding hike to the Great Cavern.
Time: approximately 7 hours. High season only.
3-D — Huchuy Picchu Mountain
Royal sector combined with the hike to Huchuy Picchu Mountain.
Time: approximately 2.5 hours. High season only.
Which routes do I recommend?
There is no single best circuit for everyone. It depends on what you want from your visit.
If your main interest is to see and understand Machu Picchu, I recommend 2-A, 2-B or 3-B. These routes are especially suitable for travelers interested in the architecture, history, plazas, temples and organization of the city. For a good specialized guide, the difference between these three routes is not as important as choosing the route that matches your interests.
If you also want a mountain hike, 3-A is an excellent option because it combines the archaeological visit with Huayna Picchu.
What about having a guide?
A guide is not mandatory. You can visit Machu Picchu without a guide if you prefer.
The entrance ticket does not include a guide. If you want a guide, you need to hire one separately.
There are many guides around the bus station and at the entrance to Machu Picchu. However, it is difficult to know in advance who will provide a truly specialized guiding experience. Some visitors may receive mainly general tourist information, while others may want a deeper explanation of the history, architecture and significance of the site.
If your goal is simply to see Machu Picchu, you may be perfectly happy visiting independently. If you want to understand what you are seeing and make the most of your time inside the archaeological site, I recommend choosing an experienced, specialized guide in advance.
The most important thing
Machu Picchu is beautiful by itself. But behind the stonework, terraces, plazas, temples, water systems and carefully planned architecture is a great deal of knowledge about Inka architecture, engineering, religion and the relationship between people and the landscape.
A specialized guide should offer more than basic tourist information. The goal is to help you understand what you are looking at, answer your questions and explain the history and meaning behind the places you are visiting.
Choose the route according to your interests, understand what your ticket actually includes, and plan your time realistically. That way, you arrive at Machu Picchu with clear expectations and can make the most of your visit.
